Falchion

Falchion is a Finnish metal entity primarily active during the mid-to-late 2000s, serving as a critical bridge between the melodic death metal boom and the rise of the Finnish folk metal scene. Founded by Juho Kauppinen, who would later gain fame as the accordionist for Korpiklaani, the band represents a more guitar-centric, aggressive side of his musical identity.

Their sound is defined by a 'heavy metal' core that utilizes the harmonic vocabulary of melodic death metal (At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity) but applies it to themes of paganism and historical warfare. Their debut, 'Legacy of Heathens', established a raw, unpolished aesthetic that favored speed and rhythmic drive. By their final release, 'Chronicles of the Dead', the production had sharpened, aligning them with peers like Ensiferum or Kalmah. Despite their dissolution in 2009, they remain a cult favorite for their ability to evoke 'viking' atmospheres through purely electric instrumentation, avoiding the kitsch often associated with the genre. They are a prime example of the 'Lahti sound' - melodic, cold, and relentlessly energetic.
