Epic, battle-ready metal that balances harsh growls with soaring, hymnic melodies. It is the sound of a forest fire in a frozen landscape. For fans of Nordic lore.
Wolfchant delivers a sound that feels like a massive, communal gathering in a pre-Christian wilderness. It is heavy and aggressive, rooted in the blast beats and rasps of black metal, but it is fundamentally built on a foundation of melody. The music often swells into massive, anthemic choruses that feel designed for a thousand voices to shout in unison, creating a sense of ancient triumph that is rare in more nihilistic metal circles.
What sets them apart is the 'hymnic' quality of their songwriting. While many pagan metal bands lean into either raw folk instrumentation or pure black metal chaos, Wolfchant finds a middle ground where the guitars provide a galloping, rhythmic drive that feels like a cavalry charge. The use of synthesizers is strategic, adding a layer of cinematic scale without drowning out the grit of the rhythm section.
New listeners should start with 'A Pagan Storm'. It represents the band at their most iconic, featuring the perfect blend of their early melodic death metal roots and the grand, storytelling ambition that defined their later career. It is an essential document of the mid-2000s European pagan metal explosion.
Wolfchant is a metal band formed in Sankt Oswald, Germany, in August 2003 by Lokhi (Mario Lokhi Möginger), Gaahnt, Skaahl (Mario Liebl), and Norgahad. Wolfchant's lyrics deal with legends and folk tales from Nordic mythology. In August 2005 they signed a contract with CCP Records, managed by Caleb Murrell-Smith. With the first full-length album Bloody Tales of Disgraced Lands (2005) the band gained supra-regional respect. In February 2007 Nattulv became a member of Wolfchant after former bass guitar Gaahnt quit the band for family reasons. Nattulv was replaced by Bahznar, for their album Determined Damnation, which was released in April 2009. The band made a guest appearance in the Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode "Totem Pole", which aired in 2012.
