Gritty Finnish melodic death metal that trades pure speed for a heavy, mid-tempo hard rock groove. Perfect for fans of the 'death n roll' era of Entombed.
Gandalf occupies that specific, high-octane intersection where the aggression of melodic death metal meets the swagger of classic hard rock. Their sound is defined by a thick, rhythmic engine that prioritizes a 'swinging' groove over the frantic blast beats typical of their peers. It is music that feels mechanical yet organic, like a well-oiled engine running slightly too hot.
What truly sets them apart is the melodic sensibility of the guitar work. While the vocals remain a gravelly, intense rasp, the guitars often break into harmonized leads and blues-inflected solos that wouldn't feel out of place on a 70s rock record. This creates a unique tension between the dark, heavy atmosphere of the Finnish metal scene and a more traditional, anthemic rock energy.
Start with 'Rock Hell' if you want to hear them at their most refined and grooviest. It captures the essence of their 'death n roll' evolution, offering catchy hooks buried under layers of distortion and grit. It is an ideal entry point for those who find traditional death metal too abrasive but want something heavier than standard radio rock.
Gandalf was a Finnish melodic death metal band from Helsinki. They incorporated elements of traditional hard rock/heavy metal into their sound, which drew comparisons with Entombed and Sentenced. The group was formed in 1993 by drummer (then guitarist) Nalle Österman (later in Shaman, Korpiklaani and Lullacry), guitarist Timo Nyberg and vocalist Jari Hurskainen, with session drummer Mika "Gas Lipstick" Karppinen, who later achieved fame playing with the band HIM. They released both of their albums through Wicked World Records, a subsidiary of Earache Records. The name Gandalf came from when the founding fans of the band used to refer to Gandalf's guitarist as the guitar wizard, Gandalf (from The Lord of the Rings). Since then, the band decided to call their band Gandalf.
