Oz

Oz is a seminal Finnish heavy metal band, formed in 1977, that played a pivotal role in establishing the Nordic metal identity. Though originating in Nakkila, Finland, the band spent much of its career based in Stockholm, Sweden, leading to their frequent association with the Swedish metal scene.

Their sound identity is firmly rooted in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) tradition, characterized by aggressive riffing, high-tempo 'galloping' rhythms, and the gritty, raspy vocal style of Ape De Martini. Their 1983 masterpiece, 'Fire in the Brain,' remains a cult classic, cited by critics as one of the most energetic and influential European metal releases of the early 80s. Despite a hiatus in the 1990s, the band's 2010 reformation proved their longevity, transitioning into a more modern production style while retaining their core traditionalist values. They occupy a unique cultural position as the 'missing link' between early hard rock and the eventual explosion of Finnish extreme metal, maintaining a dedicated following among crate-diggers and traditional metal purists.
