Polished German power metal with a gritty, hard-rock edge. Massive choruses and technical precision for when you need to feel invincible.
Masterplan was formed in 2001 by guitarist Roland Grapow and drummer Uli Kusch following their departure from power metal titans Helloween. Seeking a more modern and mature direction than their former band, they recruited Norwegian vocalist Jørn Lande, whose bluesy, Coverdale-esque delivery became a cornerstone of the Masterplan identity.
Their 2003 self-titled debut was a critical and commercial success, winning the European Border Breakers Award and establishing them as leaders of the 'new wave' of power metal. The band's sound is characterized by Grapow's technical yet melodic guitar work, Kusch's inventive drumming, and a sophisticated use of keyboards that adds atmosphere without veering into symphonic cheese. Despite numerous lineup changes, including the departure and return of Lande and the eventual exit of Kusch, Masterplan has maintained a reputation for high-quality songwriting that bridges the gap between traditional heavy metal and progressive power metal. They are frequently cited as a primary influence on modern melodic metal bands who prioritize production value and vocal grit over genre tropes.
