Mentallo & the Fixer

Dense, hyper-kinetic industrial layers and distorted vocals that feel like a nervous system overclocking. Dark electro for deep focus or basement intensity.

Intro

Mentallo & the Fixer, primarily the project of brothers Gary and Dwayne Dassing, are foundational figures in the American electro-industrial and dark electro scenes. Emerging from Texas in the late 1980s, they bridged the gap between the structured aggression of European EBM (like Front 242) and the more experimental, sample-heavy textures of early Skinny Puppy. Their sound identity is defined by extreme rhythmic density and 'horror-vacui' production, where every frequency is filled with shifting synth leads, distorted vocal treatments, and complex percussion.

Their career arc is marked by a transition from the raw, hardware-limited sounds of 'No Rest for the Wicked' to the sophisticated, almost symphonic industrial of 'Revelations 23' and 'Burnt Beyond Recognition.' After Dwayne's departure in 1999, Gary Dassing pushed the project into even more abstract, experimental territory with albums like 'Algorythum,' incorporating IDM influences and increasingly complex molecular-themed concepts. They are critically regarded as masters of the 'Metropolis Records' era, influencing a generation of dark electronic artists who prioritize technical proficiency and atmospheric depth over simple club hooks. Their work remains a benchmark for the 'dark electro' subgenre, noted for its unique blend of spiritual/occult themes and high-tech sonic aggression.
