Contradictions Collapse

Released in 1991, Contradictions Collapse is the debut studio album by Swedish metal pioneers Meshuggah. While the band is now synonymous with the 'djent' movement and extreme polymetric experimentation, this debut finds them firmly rooted in technical thrash metal, heavily influenced by bands like Metallica and Anthrax, but infused with a burgeoning interest in industrial rhythms and avant-garde structures. Originally titled '(All This Because of) Greed', the album showcases a unique period where Jens Kidman played rhythm guitar and shared lead vocal duties with Fredrik Thordendal. The production is notably drier and more organic than their later work, highlighting Tomas Haake's early mastery of complex percussion. It stands as a critical bridge between the 80s thrash era and the progressive extremity of the 90s, marking the first steps of a band that would eventually redefine the parameters of heavy music.
