Mint Royale

Mint Royale emerged from Manchester in the late 1990s as a key fixture of the big beat movement, though they quickly distinguished themselves through a more melodic and pop-oriented approach than the genre's harder-edged proponents. Originally a duo consisting of Neil Claxton and Chris Baker, the group gained early momentum through high-profile remixes and the vocal support of Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim).

Their debut, 'On the Ropes', established their signature sound: a blend of hip-hop influenced breakbeats, cinematic strings, and indie-rock guest vocals (notably Lauren Laverne). This cross-genre appeal led to extensive licensing in film and television, with tracks like 'From Rusholme with Love' becoming ubiquitous in early 2000s media. Following Baker's departure in 2004, Claxton continued the project, maintaining the brand's reputation for high-quality production and infectious, sample-heavy grooves. Their cultural footprint was further cemented by the 2008 chart-topping success of their 'Singin' in the Rain' remix. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the aggressive big beat era and the more refined downtempo and synth-pop movements that followed.
