Formed in Bradford in 1980, New Model Army (NMA) occupies a unique space in British music history, bridging the gap between the political urgency of punk and the atmospheric depth of post-punk and folk-rock. Led by the singular vision of Justin Sullivan, the band's sound is characterized by Stuart Morrow's early 'lead-bass' style and Robert Heaton's later tribal drumming, which moved the band away from standard 4/4 rock tropes.
Their career arc is one of fierce independence; despite brief brushes with major label success in the late 80s, they have largely operated on their own terms, cultivating a global, cult-like following known for its intense loyalty.
