Rio

Rio (stylized as RIO) is a foundational pillar of Peruvian rock en español, emerging from the Pueblo Libre district of Lima in 1984. The band, led by Pocho Prieto and the Galarza brothers, became the voice of a generation during a period of significant social and economic upheaval in Peru.

Their sound identity is a synthesis of 80s new wave, AOR, and guitar-driven pop rock, characterized by high-energy arrangements and accessible melodies. Unlike the more avant-garde or darkwave acts of the Lima underground, Rio achieved massive commercial success by bridging the gap between radio-friendly pop and the burgeoning 'Rock Subterráneo' spirit. Their career is notable for its longevity, maintaining a consistent lineup and touring schedule for nearly four decades. Critically, they are recognized for 'La universidad,' a song that became a definitive anthem for Peruvian youth.
