Galloping German power metal with a nautical heart. Triumphant riffs and raspy vocals built for high-speed travel and historical storytelling.
Running Wild is a foundational pillar of the German heavy metal scene, emerging from Hamburg in the mid-1970s. While their 1984 debut 'Gates to Purgatory' leaned into the occult imagery common in early black and speed metal, their 1987 release 'Under Jolly Roger' marked a permanent shift toward historical and nautical themes.
This pivot effectively birthed the 'Pirate Metal' subgenre, though Running Wild maintains a more serious, historically researched approach than many of their modern successors. Led by frontman and primary songwriter Rolf 'Rock 'n' Rolf' Kasparek, the band's sound is characterized by a signature 'galloping' rhythm, raspy but melodic vocals, and a heavy reliance on twin-guitar harmonies influenced by Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s, they were part of the 'Big Four' of German Power Metal alongside Helloween, Grave Digger, and Rage. Despite a brief hiatus in 2009, their return in 2012 solidified their status as enduring icons of traditional metal, maintaining a massive following in Europe and South America.
