Siglo XX

Siglo XX was a seminal Belgian post-punk and coldwave outfit hailing from Genk, an industrial coal-mining town that significantly informed their bleak, atmospheric sound. Formed in the late 1970s, they became a cornerstone of the Belgian 'ultra-gloom' scene alongside acts like Digital Dance and Polyphonic Size. Their sound identity is characterized by prominent, driving basslines, angular guitar work heavily treated with chorus and delay, and the somber, deadpan vocal delivery of Erik Dries.

Their career arc saw them move from raw, DIY punk origins to a more polished, yet still dark, alternative rock sound by the late 1980s on the Play It Again Sam label. Culturally, they represent the anarchist-influenced, fiercely independent spirit of the European underground, taking their name from a Bolivian mining union. Critically, they are often compared to Joy Division and The Comsat Angels, though they maintained a distinctively 'continental' coldwave aesthetic that was less blues-based and more mechanical.
