Formed in 1983 at Gang Potlot, Jakarta, Slank is a cornerstone of Indonesian rock history. Originally starting as a Rolling Stones cover band called Cikini Stone Complex, they evolved into a powerhouse of original material that defined the 'slengean' aesthetic: a carefree, anti-establishment persona that resonated deeply with the Indonesian working class and youth.
Their early 1990s output, particularly albums like 'Suit-Suit... He... He...' and 'Generasi Biru,' marked a shift in the national music landscape, moving away from polished pop toward a rawer, blues-based hard rock sound. Despite significant lineup changes in the mid-90s, the core leadership of drummer Bimbim and vocalist Kaka maintained the band's cultural relevance. Slank is notable for their 'Slankers' fan community, which functions as a massive social movement. Critically, they are lauded for their bravery in addressing political corruption and social issues during and after the New Order era. Their influence is foundational, paving the way for the alternative rock explosion in Indonesia during the late 90s and 2000s.
