Explosive, sunshine-soaked swing and jive that feels like a vintage Technicolor musical. High-energy brass and slapping bass for when you need an instant mood lift.
The Jive Aces sound like a burst of pure, unadulterated optimism. Their music is a high-speed collision between the sophisticated arrangements of the big band era and the raw, kinetic energy of early rock and roll. Every track is anchored by a relentless, swinging rhythm section and topped with a horn section that sounds like it’s constantly celebrating. It is music that refuses to let you sit still, characterized by bright melodies and a sense of showmanship that feels both vintage and vital.
What truly distinguishes them is their 'yellow suit' energy. While many swing revival bands lean into a moody, noir-inspired aesthetic, The Jive Aces embrace a vibrant, sunshine-drenched persona. Their technical proficiency is immense, particularly in the way they blend traditional jive with elements of skiffle and blues, but it is always served with a wink and a smile. The interplay between the honking saxophone and the boogie-woogie piano creates a dense, joyful wall of sound that is unmistakably theirs.
For the uninitiated, 'Bring Me Sunshine' is the essential starting point. It perfectly encapsulates their ability to take a familiar standard and inject it with enough rhythmic caffeine to power a small city. It’s the kind of music that works as well at a massive summer festival as it does in a quiet living room that needs a little more light. If you love the energy of Louis Prima but want a modern, high-fidelity punch, this is your band.
The Jive Aces are a six-piece UK-based, swing band that was formed in 1989. They were Britain's Got Talent semi-finalists in 2012. They have released 12 albums, as well as compilations, EPs and singles and have performed at numerous major events, festivals, theatres and venues in over 40 countries. The band was founded by vocalist Ian Clarkson, drummer Peter Howell (who went to school with Ian in Billericay), bassist Ken Smith and saxophonist "Big" John Fordham. The four met in East London jive and jazz clubs. They cut their teeth street entertaining and were soon being offered shows in UK and Europe. After several years of touring the band with various other musicians, the four met Alex Douglas (trombone, bongos, blues harp, washboard) and Vince Hurley (piano) who became permanent members. Grazia Clarkson, the band's publicist, has also become a regular performing member playing several featured songs on accordion. The band is recognized as one of the top swing bands in the world, something borne out by their extensive international travel (the band has performed in over 40 countries). The June 2015 issue of Vintage Rock magazine described them as the "UK's number one jive and swing band". They have received awards from Variety, the Children's Charity and the City of Derry International Music Award in 2006. On 12 September 2018 The Jive Aces won "Best Band" at the Boisdale Music Awards. The award was presented by Jools Holland, who then joined the band for a boogie woogie jam session. The band is also notable for having strong links to the Church of Scientology as members of the Sea Organization, and for promoting the group and its missions.
