Bright, jittery indie rock that pairs glitchy electronics with soaring brass and vocal harmonies. High-energy anthems for the restless and the nostalgic.
The Main Drag sounds like the intersection of a basement rock show and a high-end home studio. Their music is characterized by a nervous, kinetic energy, where driving drum beats and jagged guitar lines are softened by lush, multi-tracked vocal harmonies and unexpected orchestral flourishes like trumpets and synths. It is music that feels both meticulously crafted and endearingly homemade.
What truly sets them apart is their 'orchestrated electronica' approach to indie rock. They don't just play songs; they build them out of layers of organic instruments and digital glitches. This creates a sound that is simultaneously nostalgic for the 2000s blog-rock era and forward-thinking in its use of sampling and texture. There is a sense of intellectual curiosity in their arrangements that rewards close listening.
Start with 'Yours As Fast As Mine' to hear them at their most anthemic and accessible. It captures the band's ability to turn complex, occasionally oblique lyrics into catchy, shout-along choruses. If you want something a bit more atmospheric and experimental, 'You Are Underwater' showcases their growth into deeper, more immersive sonic territories.
The Main Drag is an indie pop/indie rock band local to Boston, Massachusetts. The group incorporates elements as diverse as folk-pop to orchestrated electronica together with their occasionally oblique lyrics. The band releases albums on their own imprint, Reasonable People's League (RPL Audio). The band currently consists of Maxi Boch (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard, trumpet), Dan Cardinal (bass, engineering), Jon Carter (guitar, bass, vocals, keyboard) and John Drake (drums, sampler, vocals). Adam Arrigo and Matt Levitt, both original band members, eventually left the band - Levitt after the release of the second album, and Arrigo after the release of the third. Boch, Carter, and Drake are also members of the post-punk band Blanks. The band has released three albums to date, the latest being You Are Underwater, which was released by RPL Audio in December 2009.
