Black Winter Day

Released in 1994 as a companion to their landmark 'Tales from the Thousand Lakes' LP, the Black Winter Day EP solidified Amorphis as the premier architects of Finnish folk-metal. While their debut was more aligned with traditional death metal, this era saw the band integrating 1970s progressive rock influences, specifically through the prominent use of Moog and Hammond-style keyboards. The title track became an unlikely anthem for the genre, defined by its infectious synth lead and melancholic lilt. Lyrically, the album draws directly from the Kalevala, Finland's national epic, translating ancient oral poetry into a heavy metal context.
