Concrete

Concrete is the 'lost' debut album of Fear Factory, recorded in 1991 with producer Ross Robinson but shelved for over a decade due to contractual disputes. While Soul of a New Machine is officially their debut, Concrete contains the original versions of many of those songs, captured with a significantly rawer, more death-grind aesthetic. Robinson's production here is a far cry from the 'Nu-Metal' sound he would later pioneer; instead, it emphasizes a punishing, mid-heavy guitar tone and a dry, snapping snare. The album serves as a crucial missing link between the Los Angeles grindcore scene and the industrial metal movement. It highlights the band's transition from a standard death metal outfit into the rhythmic innovators they became. Despite being released posthumously in 2002, the recordings are a time capsule of 1991's extreme metal underground, showcasing Burton C. Bell's early vocal experimentation and Dino Cazares' developing staccato technique.
