Diatribes

Released in 1996, Diatribes is often cited as Napalm Death's most significant stylistic departure. Following the death metal leaning of Fear, Emptiness, Despair, this record fully embraced industrial metal and 'groove metal' influences, moving away from the blast-beat-heavy grindcore that defined their early years. Recorded at Colin Richardson's studio, the album features a more spacious, rhythmic production style that highlights Shane Embury's prominent, distorted bass lines. Lyrically, the album moved further into sophisticated socio-political critique, focusing on themes of greed, media manipulation, and psychological isolation. While polarizing for purists at the time of its release, it has since been re-evaluated as a brave exploration of texture and rhythm that paved the way for the band's later ability to blend disparate extreme styles. It remains a standout for its unique atmosphere and the 'Greed Killing' single, which became an unlikely anthem for the band.
