Carcass

Carcass is a foundational pillar of extreme metal, originating from Liverpool in 1985. Their career arc is one of the most significant in the genre, evolving from the 'goregrind' pioneers of Reek of Putrefaction to the architects of melodic death metal with Heartwork.

This evolution was driven by the technical growth of guitarist Bill Steer and the cynical, articulate lyricism of Jeff Walker. Their mid-period work, specifically Necroticism, introduced a sophisticated 'medical' vocabulary that differentiated them from the cartoonish violence of their contemporaries. Despite a decade-long hiatus starting in 1996, their 2013 return with Surgical Steel was a rare critical and commercial success for a legacy act, reaffirming their relevance. They occupy a unique cultural position as the 'thinking person's' death metal band, blending extreme speed with traditional rock sensibilities and a dry, British wit.
