Released in 2001, Nation is Sepultura's eighth studio album and the second to feature vocalist Derrick Green. Following the transitional Against, Nation represents a more confident and cohesive vision for the post-Max Cavalera era. The album is a concept piece focused on the idea of a utopian, borderless nation called 'Sepulnation,' with lyrics heavily focused on political activism and social justice. Sonically, it leans further into alternative metal and groove metal, incorporating a wide range of guest appearances including Jello Biafra, Dr. Israel, and the cello quartet Apocalyptica. While it retained the band's signature tribal percussion elements, the production is more polished and layered than their 90s output. It remains a polarizing but essential chapter in their discography, marking their final release for Roadrunner Records and showcasing a band attempting to redefine the boundaries of heavy music through collaboration and ideological ambition.
