Recorded at Guillaume Tell Studios in Paris, The Book of Souls represents a significant milestone as Iron Maiden's first double studio album. Producer Kevin Shirley opted for a more spontaneous approach, with the band often recording songs shortly after writing them to preserve a 'live' energy. This resulted in a less polished, more organic sound compared to the clinical precision of some modern metal. The album is bookended by two Bruce Dickinson compositions: the occult-tinged 'If Eternity Should Fail' and the monumental 'Empire of the Clouds.' The latter is a career anomaly, featuring Dickinson on piano and clocking in at over eighteen minutes, making it the longest track in their discography. Lyrically, the album explores Mayan civilization and broader themes of the soul's journey, though it stops short of being a formal concept record. It was a massive commercial success, debuting at number one in over twenty countries, and was hailed by critics as a late-career masterpiece that successfully integrated their classic NWOBHM roots with expansive progressive ambitions.
