The More Things Change…

Released in 1997, The More Things Change... is the sophomore effort from Machine Head and a pivotal document in the evolution of groove metal. Following the massive success of Burn My Eyes, the band doubled down on the 'groove' aspect of their sound, incorporating more dissonant harmonics, slower tempos, and a darker, more atmospheric approach to songwriting. This album marked the debut of lead guitarist Logan Mader's more experimental lead work and Dave McClain's intricate, jazz-influenced drumming, which provided a more complex rhythmic foundation than their debut. Lyrically, the album shifts from the social riots of the previous record toward more personal, psychological themes of betrayal, isolation, and inner strength, though tracks like 'Colors' (an Ice-T cover) maintain their connection to urban street culture. It is widely regarded as one of the heaviest mainstream metal releases of its era, bridging the gap between thrash and the nu-metal explosion.
