The Soundhouse Tapes

The Soundhouse Tapes is the seminal debut EP by Iron Maiden, representing the first professional recordings of the band. Captured at Spaceward Studios on December 31, 1978, the session yielded four tracks, three of which - 'Prowler', 'Invasion', and 'Iron Maiden' - made it onto this release. The EP is a cornerstone of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), famously championed by DJ Neal Kay at the Soundhouse club. Sonically, it is significantly rawer than their 1980 self-titled debut, featuring the original lineup with Paul Di'Anno on vocals. The production is famously lo-fi, characterized by a dry, punchy mix that emphasizes the interplay between Dave Murray's fluid guitar leads and Steve Harris's aggressive bass style. Its success was unprecedented for a self-released mail-order record, selling out its 5,000-copy run almost instantly and cementing Iron Maiden's status as the leaders of the burgeoning metal underground.
