Tyrant

Tyrant is a seminal Australian heavy metal band hailing from Tasmania, formed in 1983. Originally emerging from an AOR project called Slyder, the group pivoted toward a harder, blues-influenced metal sound that drew heavy inspiration from the 'Big Three' of gritty rock: AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, and Motörhead.

Their 1984 EP 'Never Too Loud' remains a cult classic of the era, representing the peak of the Tasmanian metal scene before the band migrated to Sydney. In the mid-80s, they became a fixture of the 'Metal Crusade' circuit, bridging the gap between traditional hard rock and the emerging speed metal underground. After a long hiatus starting in 1986, the original lineup reunited in 1998, pivoting toward a more modern but still fundamentally 'classic' metal sound on albums like 'Freaks of Nature' and 'Thunder Down Under.' Critically, they are viewed as essential practitioners of the 'Oz Rock' metal hybrid, valued by collectors for their authentic, non-commercial approach to the genre.
