Gritty, unpolished speed metal that birthed the extreme underground. It is loud, sloppy, and gloriously satanic rock and roll for the lawless.
Venom is the definitive bridge between the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the extreme metal explosion of the 1980s. Formed in Newcastle in 1978, the trio of Cronos, Mantas, and Abaddon stripped away the bluesy polish of traditional heavy metal in favor of a raw, punk-inflected speed metal sound.
Their 1981 debut 'Welcome to Hell' and its 1982 successor 'Black Metal' are foundational texts; the latter famously provided the name for an entire subgenre, though Venom's own sound remained closer to a hyper-aggressive form of speed metal. Their influence is peerless, cited as a primary catalyst for the 'Big Four' of thrash (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax) as well as the first wave of black metal (Bathory, Hellhammer). Critically, they were often dismissed in their prime for lack of technical proficiency, but this 'sloppiness' became a hallmark of the lo-fi aesthetic in extreme music. Culturally, they pioneered the use of overt satanic imagery as a central marketing and lyrical pillar, moving beyond the subtle hints of Black Sabbath into full-blown occult theater.
